Transactional Leadership

Transactional Leadership

A company culture of accountability, ownership, and workplace autonomy can be embraced by employees through the inspiration and motivation of transformational leadership, a management style that fosters innovation and change. The strategy, which has its roots in the theories of James V. Downton and has been developed by James Burns and Bernard M. Bass, places a strong emphasis on executive-level authentic leadership. The transformational leadership model is composed of four primary components: individual consideration, intellectual stimulation, inspirational motivation, and idealized influence. Idealized influence entails setting a good example and encouraging openness, respect, and trust. Intellectual stimulation fosters innovation, creativity, and critical thinking while also encouraging the questioning of established beliefs. By helping workers relate to the organization's vision, inspirational motivation seeks to develop a sense of purpose and dedication. Individual consideration acknowledges that every employee has different needs, and customizes mentorship to support them in achieving both personal and organizational goals.

According to Bass' model, transformational leaders distinguish themselves by promoting moral standards, encouraging an ethical work environment, creating a company culture, putting an emphasis on open communication, cooperation, and authenticity, and offering guidance while letting staff members make decisions.

Various industry leaders such as Amazon's Jeff Bezos, Netflix's Reed Hastings, Apple's Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, Aetna's Mark Bertolini, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, and others are examples of transformational leaders. CIOs are essential in assisting employees in the IT sector, where digital transformation is critical, by providing inspiration and motivation for success. The need for digital transformation has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which emphasizes the importance of transformational leadership even more.

The contrast between transactional and transformational leadership is also emphasized in the article. Transactional leadership emphasizes consistency and routine and depends on incentives and penalties for motivation, whereas transformational leadership fosters growth, agility, and inventiveness. Transformational leadership is necessary to stay competitive and ahead of the curve in the quickly changing tech sector.

While growing up, I came across Transactional Leadership style the most. I grew up in an environment where for doing good, we would get rewarded and if we did something wrong, we would get punished. It is necessary to follow this method in some situations to keep things in control.
